Butuan City, Feb 2, 2018 - Citing the importance of wetlands in the urban cities development, DENR OIC, Regional Director Charlie E. Fabre on Friday, February 2, 2018 made strong appeal to the people to protect the lakes, rivers, marshlands and streams.

Speaking at a program ceremony read in his behalf by Assistant RD for Management Services Rosendo Asunto at Barangay San Roque in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte, RD Fabre said the DENR leads in the celebration of World Wetlands Day held in the different locations in Caraga Region by the CENRO and PENRO personnel  in  Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Siargao Islands and the Dinagat province.

The DENR personnel at the regional office mostly from the Conservation and Development Division under ARD for Technical Services Maritess M. Ocampo conducted their activities in Lumbocan, Butuan City where they planted mangrove propagules in coordination with the members of the Lumbocan Bacuan Planters Association.

The activities conducted beside mangrove planting are migratory bird watching, information and education campaign about wetlands in selected public elementary school, film showing, radio announcements and coastal clean-ups.

This year’s theme for the World Wetland’s Day Celebrations is “Wetlands for a sustainable future. Urban Wetlands Make Cities Liveable”.

RD Fabre urged the people to protect the wetlands ecosystem because “it plays an important role in serving as water filters and regulating floods in the urban areas”.

“The lakes, rivers, ponds, and streams enhance the landscape of the city and regarded as desirable place to settle or just plainly watch and appreciate the beauty of nature” he said.

People tend to ignore the importance of wetlands particularly the swamps without knowing its benefits since it provide support to biodiversity and habitat for wildlife. It also provide in absorbing and storing excess rainfall and connectivity across the landscape.

But the most important function of wetlands is carbon sequestration.

World Wetland’s Day is held annually on February 2, marking the date of the adoption of the Convention of Wetlands on this day in 1971.

The DENR takes advantage of this celebration to hold activities aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits.
