Tamayo on Thursday at the DENR Regional Office in Butuan City to convey the programs and policies of DENR Secretary Regina Paz Lopez in connection with her campaign against environmental crimes and destructions.

Melicor Jr. for Management Services, and the Regional Director of Environmental Management Bureau Wilson Trajeco, the Mines and Geo Sciences Bureau representative Engr. Undersecretary Art Valdez said he was instructed by Sec. Lopez to strengthen coordination between the Environment SWAT and the DENR officials of the Region to effectively enforce the laws and regulations on environment to stop timber poaching and illegal mining operations that destroy the environment.
USEC Valdez also explained to the DENR Regional Officials about the on-going mining audit being conducted in Surigao del Norte and Agusan del Norte and other mining sites in the country which are results of the objective of Secretary Lopez to give social justice in communities affected by mining operations.
He said the SWAT will implement the environmental laws. “Anything against environment is a crime” he added. This task force will assess law enforcement needs and operations. It shall also form multi-sectoral law enforcement teams if necessary and provide quick response to urgent calls to deter environmental crimes.
Sec. Lopez said the SWAT team will work with the military and the police to hunt down environment criminals.
Secretary Lopez said that as the mining audit continues, “miners operating without necessary permits would be hunted down, like thugs and drug lords, under her watch”.
Valdez said he will look into the status of the mining companies which operations have been suspended by the DENR Secretary. “We want to verify reports that these suspended mining companies are still operating in defiance of the order” he said.
Valdez shared some advice to the field officials to settle the issues and problems related to the environment in their respective jurisdiction. “Let us, as possible, prevent these unsolved issues to reach the Secretary’s desk” he said.
“Let us give chance for ourselves to solve the problems” he said. “I am willing to help you address your problems, issues, and concerns in your area but I would expect everyone to follow and implement the laws, rules, and regulations on environment” he said.
