Butuan City – Two teams were formed by DENR 13 Regional Director Nonito M. Tamayo last week in support of the Memorandum Order No.1-2016 issued by Secretary Regina P. Lopez imposing the audit of all operating mines and moratorium on New Mining Projects.
The team is composed of representatives from the Bureau of Fisheries Region 13, PENRO Surigao del Norte, Mines and Geo Sciences Bureau -13, Diocese of Surigao City, Department of Agrarian Reform, Department of Health, DENR-13, CCPD, and the Department of Agriculture.

Surigao del Norte and Agusan del Norte have been prioritized by Secretary Lopez after the members of the indigenous people’s group met with her earlier this week and aired their grievances against the mining companies in these areas.
“There will be a moratorium on all new mining applications until the audit is done” Secretary Lopez said.
Since the audit started, four mining firms in Zambales and three in Palawan were suspended because of violations. (HERZON GALLEGO)

Butuan City – Secretary Gina Lopez of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources conducted a meeting with a group of indigenous people of Mindanao who requested her for a dialogue to complain about the operations of some mining companies that affected their livelihood.
The dialogue was held at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Manila last Sunday, Juy 24, 2016. The lumads cited the operations of the San Roque Metals Inc. in Tubay, Agusan del Norte, the Sagittarius Mines Inc. in Tampakan, Sultan Kudarat and the Greenstone Mining and Taganito Mining in Surigao del Norte whose operations, they said, have seriously affected the IP communities due to siltation, open pit, and stockpiles.
The Lumads were among the participants of the Manilakbayan 2016, which marched on the streets of Manila from Mindanao to bring their plight to the attention of President Rodrigo Duterte who was delivering his first State of the Nation Address.
The Lumads also asked the DENR Secretary to stop illegal logging and encroachment in watershed areas, and stop militarization in their areas which they claimed was related to the plan of large-scale mining companies to setup new businesses.
Secretary Lopez has assured the Lumads that she will call for an investigation and audit of the erring mining companies they have mentioned. “I am one with you in your cause” she told the Lumads.
"Sususpindihin natin ang mga mining company na lumalabag sa batas," Lopez said as she urged them to submit their proposed development plan for areas which have been affected by destructive mining activities.
She said the government will study the development plan submitted by the Lumads and address their concerns at the soonest possible time.
