DENR-CENRO Tubay conducts Dalaw Turo for World Seagrass Day

In line with the observance of this year’s World Seagrass Day celebration, the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Tubay, Agusan del Norte conducted a Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) campaign cum Dalaw-Turo today, March 1, 2023, at Tubay National High School (TNH), Brgy. Poblacion I, Tubay, Agusan del Norte.
The activity was actively participated by a total of 37 students of Tubay NHS composed of Junior and Senior High School students, Supreme Student Government (SSG) officers, and members of Tubay Young ADNERT and facilitated by CENRO Tubay Youth Desk Officer (YDO) and Information Officer (IO)-designate Forest Technician I (FT-I) Christian C. Caña.
The Dalaw Turo aims to raise awareness about seagrass and its significant functions in the marine ecosystem.
In his lecture during the Dalaw-Turo, YDO-IO-designate FT-I Caña discussed the biology and ecology of seagrasses, their role in the marine ecosystem, and their provisioning services. He also presented the various threats these important resource faces and what they can do as students to help preserve and protect our seagrass ecosystems.
He imparted during the activity that per the assessment of CENRO Tubay, out of the four coastal municipalities within its jurisdiction, only the town of Tubay in Agusan del Norte harbors seagrasses. Hence, FT Cana, a marine biologist, emphasized the need for the students to share what they have learned during the Dalaw-Turo with their friends, peers, and families, the importance of this resource, and to give attention to protecting this ecosystem.
After the discussion, the students were encouraged to ask questions and clarifications on the presented topic. The facilitators likewise asked questions to the students to assess what they learned from the dalaw-turo.
Based on the given feedback from the students, they have shared that they have greatly learned from the conducted discussion and even shared that it was their first time to know about seagrasses and their importance.
As a token for the students who joined the dalaw-turo, bookmarks with facts and information related to seagrass were given to each student. (With report from CENRO Tubay)
