The DENR Caraga hosted the joint Regional Development Council-Philippine Economic Zone Authority (RDC-PEZA) Special Meeting held at the DENR 13 Regional Learning Center, Ambago, Butuan City, July 5, 2021.

The meeting, which was presided over by RDC-13 Chair, Agusan del Norte Governor Dale B. Corvera, was primarily conducted to discuss potential areas that can be declared as public special economic zones within the region.

During the meeting, PEZA Director General Charito B. Plaza promoted the establishment of special economic zones in the countryside to become economic drivers in every region. The initiative was anchored on Administrative Order No. 18 issued by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in 2019, directing the PEZA and other concerned government agencies to strengthen the development of Special Economic Zones in areas outside Metro Manila.

In his welcome message, during the opening program, DENR Caraga Regional Executive Director Nonito M. Tamayo emphasized that Caraga region is a very strategic area for establishing an economic zone when it comes to forestry as it is the number one producer of timber in terms of raw logs production.

He also expressed his full support to this endeavor being initiated by the PEZA and the RDC-13 of which, DENR Caraga is a member.

Also present during the joint special meeting were NEDA Regional Director Priscilla R. Sonido, DOT Regional Director Nelia R. Arina, EMB-13 OIC-Regional Director Albert G. Arcamo, and representatives of other member agencies.
