DENR Caraga Regional Executive Director Nonito M. Tamayo turns over the leadership of the Regional Ecotourism Council (REC) to the Regional Director of the Department of Tourism on June 30, 2021, in a simple virtual ceremony via zoom platform.

Under Executive Order No. 111, "Establishing the Guidelines for Ecotourism Development in the Philippines," the REC was created with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Department of Environment & Natural Resources (DENR) as the primary agencies responsible for implementing ecotourism in the country. In this context, the DOT and the DENR serve as chairs of the Regional Ecotourism Committee (REC) on a rotational basis every three years.

The REC which members include representatives from NEDA, DTI, DILG, NCIP, TESDA, CHED, DedEd, CSU, FSUU, Provincial Tourism Officers of Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Islands, and Sectoral representatives, is responsible for the review, evaluation, recommendation, approval, and monitoring of ecotourism plans and projects in the region.

For the last three years (2018-2020), the DENR Regional Executive Director had chaired the REC's meetings with the Conservation and Development Division personnel as the Secretariat. This year marks the start of the DOT Regional Director's Chairmanship, who will serve for a 3-year term from 2021-2023.

"It's been an honor for our department to handle the Chairmanship of the Committee for the last three years (2018-2020). This year, it is time to pass the throne to the Regional Director of the Department of Tourism for a 3-year term from 2021-2023." RED Tamayo said during the program.

"I am sure that with the Chairmanship of the DOT, the remaining targets on the plans and programs anchored in the National Ecotourism Strategy (NES) Caraga Regional Action Plan CY 2017-2022 will be realized, and the REC will be properly guided. Rest assured that you will have our full support," he added.
