The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Surigao del Norte, headed by OIC, PENR Officer Agapito T. Patubo, in partnership with the Platinum Group Metal Corporation (PGMC), LGU Gigaquit and BLGU of Mahanub, recently conducted a Communication Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) Campaign and Tree Growing/Planting Activity at Tiltilan and Palilihan Elementary Schools in Brgy. Mahanub, Gigaquit, Surigao del Norte on June 8, 2023, in celebration of the 25th Philippine Eagle Week with the theme "Unity In Action: Achieving Success Together."
The volunteers planted a total of 135 Narra, Lanzones, and Rambutan seedlings beside the Tiltilan and Palilihan Elementary Schools. The activity aims to conserve, protect and rehabilitate the habitat of the Philippine Eagle.
After the tree planting, the Communication Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) Campaign ensued where EMS-I Julie Anne B. Arreza of PENRO SDN discussed the importance of the Philippine Eagle, its physical features, diet, reproduction, main threats, life expectancy, and conservation programs of the raptor. After the discussions, the 124 pupils received school supplies, such as notebooks, pencils, ball pens, and crayons.
The week-long activity was also participated by 59 Grade 5 and 6 Pupils from Tiltilan and Palilihan Elementary School, PGMC, LGU of Gigaquit, and Brgy. Officials of Mahanub.
In August 2020, a Philippine Eagle named “Balikatan,” reportedly coming from the thick forests of the Mamanwa ancestral domain between Gigaquit and Alegria, was rescued from Bacuag town, the reason for the regular conduct of the CEPA campaign in the area.
